March 20-31, 2002

Fr. Anton went to Dumaguete to give retreat to the Carmelite Postulants.  This is in preparation of their entrance to the Novitiate which will take place after Summer.  It has been the practice among the Carmelites that Postulants will not go home for Summer until Novitiate.  Fr. Anton will also give retreat to the Carmelite of Our Lady (Carm.O.L.) while in Dumaguete.

March 19, 2002

Friars Tony and Toto attended Diaconal Ordination of Dom Austin Cadiz (Vincent Cadiz) of the Order of St. Benedict (OSB) in San Beda Church, Mendiola.  Vincent is our student in Mount Carmel College and was much involved in the Parish of San Francisco, Agusan del Sur.  The Carmelites are very happy that Vincent decided to accept the Diaconal Ordination.  When asked, "when will your priestly ordination be?"  He smiled and answered, "just wait for the recommendation of my Formators."

March 17, 2002

Brother Arie left for Mindanao to oversee the final stage of the school construction. Toto went to the Donum Dei Family and gave recollection to almost a hundred fathers, mothers and youth.  The Donum Dei International Family is affiliated to the Order and has been contributing much as bridge between the religious and the lay.  Here in Manila, they are very much active in organizing the Missionary Fathers and Mothers which can be seen by the number of active members attending the recollection, Carmelite Studies and prayers.

March 13, 2002

We observed the 10th Anniversary of Titus Brandsma Center's Foundation. Bernard read a short history of how the Titus Brandsma House came about.  It can be recalled that much of the effort of this house was due to the late Fr. Crispin Offermanns, who died of cancer.  He was the Commissary Provincial during the construction of these houses.

March 8-10, 2002

The Tertiaries of Project 4 and Cubao Chapters had their annual retreat in Betania Retreat House, Tagaytay City facilitated by Fr. Toto Jaranilla.  More than forty Tertiaries attentively reflected on the Rule which was the focus of the Retreat.

March 2, 2002

The TOC National Council together with Fr. Toto Jaranilla, the Spiritual Director of lay Carmelites did a Fraternal Visit to Santa Ana, Tertiaries at 1:00 o'clock in the afternoon.  It can be recalled that it was Fr. Nico Hofstede, O.Carm. who started this Tertiary Group in Sta. Ana.

The Christmas Eve was celebrated by the Teresa Community in a solemn manner.  At 8:00  PM, some of the community members attended the Christmas in the Immacualte Conception Parish while some  chose to spend it among the Manyan Tribal Filipinos who were in picket and were staying in Titus Brandsma.  We shared to them clothes which was donated to us through the Hofestede Family of the Netherlands. The Mangyans were
dislocated from their  families due to mining.  They came from the islands of Mindoro and the difficulty of life brought them to demand justice here.

After the Eucharistic Celebration, the community gathered in the common refectory and shared stories, jokes, some drinks and plenty of food.  It was a festive and truly a gathering of a family away from the individual's family.
The day after the eve saw people leaving for the provinces to join their respective families for a New Year Celebration.  Frs. Marlon went back to Davao; Toto spent time with his family in Bukidnon and his relatives in Bacolod City and Jaro, Iloilo; Anton Hoogland visited the Dominican friends in Pampanga;Tony, Bernard and Bro. Arie stayed in the Acacia Compound and Fr. Martin went to visit his friends in Albay.

The Christmas air was mixed with feelings of sadness in our community since one of our confrere, Fr. Aris Escobal was in Bohol attending to the burial of his brother Jojo.  The community knew Jojo for he stayed with the community for quite sometime while was waiting for his call to board again the boat.  He was working as a seafarer before he died.

The advent  of the New Year was spent with the families and friends of the community members.  Much was accomplished  in January.  Bro. Arie went to oversee the development of the construction of Cebu Formation Center and Mount Carmel College of San Francisco, Agusan del Sur.  Fr. Toto and Irwin Mejia, our active bookkeeper, went to the commuity of Agusan del Sur to implement the financial system.  It was an exciting job with computers bogging down and financial files couldn't be saved to diskettes because the computers were very old and brown-outs were very frequent.  Finally, recommendations were given to procurators and bookkeepers on how things could be improved.  The Procure felt success to  certain extent as the Parishes of Rosario and San Francisco gave its share to the Central Fund.  We are still waiting  for the share  of Patin-ay and Prosperidad  of  the said locale.

Bro. Arie was overseeing the developments of construction since there were things in the proposed plan of the school building which were not implemented yet.  Frs. Anton and Tony went to visit Mount Carmel College  of Escalante City, Negros Occidental to celebrate 41st Anniversry of the institution.  The occasion was also graced with the presence of Fr. Anthony Scerri, O.Carm., General Councillor.  He  and Fr. Anton stayed behind to represent the community during the celebration of the Carmelites of Our Lady (Carm.O.L.) in  their canonical erection.  On the other hand, Fr. Aris visited Alain in Marinduque.  Despite the low-point in his life he is trying to overcome and to work in a customary manner.

Fr. Marlon led  also  the meeting of the Community Chroniclers.  This was a tough job for him  being involved  with the Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines (AMRSP) as Executive Secretary, Secretary of the Commissariat and Director of Media Center.  Despite his hectic schedules, he found time to give re-orientation  to the chroniclers.

Fr. Tjeu Timmermans, our Prior Provincial graced also the month of January by visiting different communities.  He finally  met our community by the last week of January and confided with the Commissary  Council his observations and recommendations during
his visit to the different local communities.  He had a lot of meetings and  consultations with our community members.  It was a productive visit as many things were put in place and put into motion.

During the month of February, the community again re-organized as there were common schedules that should be addressed.  On Febraury 14, 2002, Frs. Marlon Lacal, Aris Escobal and Tony dela Cruz went to visit Cabanatuan to have an ocular visit on the planned land donation by a Tertiary member of that locality.  The nuns informed us of this donation and were hoping that we would welcome it so we can have our presence in Central Luzon.

A fruitful  process retreat which focused on the "Talakayang Buhay"  (Life Sharing) was undergone by the community.  The said retreat took place at Villa Consuelo Retreat House owned by the Augustinian Sisters.  From  Feb. 15-17, the retreat was conducted.  This was aimed to dig deeper into our life stories.  It aimed to provide an opportunity of knowing oneself and a chance to clarify our direction in life.  We showed our vulnerability and weaknesses to each one.  In return, we were enriched and learned to appreciate more, the uniqueness of the individuals in the community.  Although, there were issues that needed follow-up, our community has realized the importance of listening with one another for only through this process can we learn to accept the individuality of each community member.

The theme of the Chapter is "Carmel: the Continuing Journey".

The General Chapter, which is celebrated every six years, is the supreme authority within the Carmelite Order. It is the main sign of unity of the Order in its diversity. It is the fraternal meeting where, together, the brothers reflect in order to remain faithful to the Gospel and the Carmelite charism, and sensitive to the needs of the times and places. By means of the General Chapter, the whole Order, led by the Spirit of the Lord, seeks to know the will of God at a particular moment in history in order to serve the Church better. Thus, in keeping with the theme chosen, the next General Chapter will aim to study efficient ways of translating the documents of the Order into daily practice. The challenge, then, is not to produce more documents but to the present documents into practice. The General Chapter will also set out to examine some principles of the Carmelite tradition in order to try and work out methods that may help the communities of the Order to continue their journey of living the Carmelite life in depth. Moreover, the Chapter will have the task of electing the Prior General and the members of the General Council for the next six years.

Feast of Titus Brandsma.  The Philippine Commissary is named after this person who was willing to offer his life for the sake of truth.  To our visitors, we wish to share with you, who is Blessed Titus Brandsma?

He is a Carmelite Priest born in Oegekloster, Friesland, Netherlands.  They were 6 in the family 5 became religious.  His 3 sisters became nuns and his brother became Franciscan.

Titus Brandsma was a martyr in Dachau.  He was arrested by the Nazi as he stood against them.  He preached and teach in the University (Nijmegen) that Nazism is an evil system.  He is a journalist, Catholic educator, man open to prayer and prophet.

While, he was in the camp, he would see to it that his fellow prisoners receive communion he arranged that the hosts be smuggled to him secretly by the village priest he would then distribute this to his co-prisoners.

From the moment Titus entered the camp, his calmness and gentleness angered his captors.  They beat him with fists, clubs and boards.  The kicked, punched and gouged him, drawing blood and often leaving him unconscious in the mud.

"Do not yield to hatred. Be patient. We are in a dark tunnel but we have to go on.  At the end, eternal light is shining for us."

On July 26, 1942 they injected Titus with a deadly drug (he died with lethal injection) and his body was burned.

Antonio de la Cruz, the Commissary Provincial of the Ancient Observance Carmelites.  The program was hosted by Bro. Boyet an OCD brother and by Sr. Elena, Carm.O.L an O.Carm. affiliate.  The celebration centered on the sharing of the scapular.  Both branches of the Order expressed it's loving identification to the scapular.  We tried to dig into the relevance of the scapular into our lives.  We then presented the output in a creative manner which delighted everyone.  As one O.Carm. friar observed, "I saw this similar gathering in Europe before, I never expected that this will be realized in Asia, in the Philippines."  Observation was expressed by Fr. Peter Kramer, O.Carm. who was one of the early Carmelite missionaries in the Philippines.
